General Information

Finding a job may not be as easy as it sounds. It is sometimes difficult to find work and, if you are from outside the EU there can be visa restrictions. The following is not a detailed explanation but a general overview of the existing rules. Please check with official sources, for example the British Embassy, for any recent changes. Generally this is the situation: Students from other EU countries do not need a particular visa to get a job. Students from outside the EU do need permission to work. Students with a student visa can apply for permission to work once they are here in the UK. Permission will often be granted if the job involves 20 hours or fewer of work and if the work does not interfere with the student's existing course. Some students choose to become an au pair in London. It is a good way of finding out about the culture of the country, by actually being a part of an English family. Also, being an au pair will leave you enough time to study at an English Language school and provide you with some extra pocket money while you are here.
